The World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) has issued a stark warning about the risks posed by tokenized equities, urging regulators to tighten oversight. These synthetic instruments, which mimic traditional stocks without conferring ownership rights, could expose investors to hidden pitfalls and erode trust in markets.

Retail investors face particular danger, as marketing materials often blur the line between tokenized products and actual shares. The WFE cautions that failure of these instruments could trigger reputational damage extending far beyond crypto markets—impacting listed companies and broader financial stability.

Regulators including the SEC, ESMA, and IOSCO received formal recommendations to expand securities laws. The proposals call for clearer custody rules and restrictions on marketing tokenized assets as stock equivalents—a MOVE that could reshape the $1.3 trillion sector's trajectory.
